Random Acts of Kindness

This entry was posted in General February 17, 2017

Random Act of KindnessHow would you feel if a stranger walked up to you and smiled? Would you smile back? Can you make a difference to someone else’s life, just for one day? February 17th is recognised as Random Act of Kindness Day, and is becoming increasingly popular as it is a chance to do something for someone else just because you can.

Wouldn’t the world be a much better place if everyone was kind to one another? Many of us would offer to help someone in need as most people are kind but the 17th February is a chance for the world, young and old to carry out a random act of kindness to cheer up someone’s day. Why not take the opportunity to make someones day.

We have put a few suggestions together if you are struggling for ideas, many of which are free and easy to do any day of the year.

  • Ring a friend or relative or send them a card and tell them how much they mean to you
  • Pay someone a compliment – Either to their face, or leave a note
  • Pop round to an elderly neighbour’s house and ask if they want to have a cup of tea and a chat, or if they want any help with anything such as taking their bin out.
  • Hold the door open
  • Buy someone a coffee or make them a cup of teaAbleworld Kindness
  • Help a disabled or elderly person – it could be help crossing the road or entering a shop
  • Buy a snack for a homeless person
  • Volunteer an hour of your time to help a local charity
  • Smile – smiling is contagious, we think you will be amazed how many people smile back!
  • Donate to a charity – this doesn’t have to be money it could be a book that you have read or an unwanted gift. You could spread some more happiness by including a note in it explaining why you would like them to have it
  • Teach your children kindness – they could donate an old toy which is in good condition to a children’s charity or playgroup.
  • Concentrate on the positives in life rather than the negatives – this will lift the mood of those you are talking to and may help them to look on the bright side of life too.
  • Listen to someone – we all have worries that can get too much at times, and all you need is someone to listen.
  • Become a Dementia Friend. There are many free sessions being held around the UK and an hour of your time could give you the understanding of Dementia which can help many people in the future.

Remember, you can also be kind to yourself – take some time to do something that you want to do and that makes you happy.

We would love to see your photos of any random acts of kindness that you can carry out to help spread the word. If you are kind to someone, hopefully that person will be kind to someone they know too!

Feel free to share any images via our Social Media pages either on Facebook @ableworld or on Twitter @ableworlduk and hopefully together we can help to spread some kindness!
